Hi Gary,
Your league sounds like fun. I have a few questions. I’m very interested in playing but I want to make sure I understand the free agent/player retention rules which could affect the team I ask for.
Free Agents The rules say that after the World Series we must declare 3 free agents. So each team posts any 3 players of their choosing off their existing 25 man roster? This has nothing to do with “real” free agents (for example Pujols or Reyes) this year? So this creates a 90 player pool that we all can bid on and we have last rights on our own players. Are there any limits on the number you can acquire? Can you pick up 5 free agents if you like and keep them all if you didn’t like your current team for example? Does this salary then become their salary/years and their real salary isn’t used any more? I like the concept as it keeps you involved all year round.
Since we’re just starting up, what happens with “real” free agents like Fielder this year? If you picked the Brewers today, is he on your roster or does he end up on the team he goes to?
Going forward in year 2, is a player who is a real free agent still on your roster regardless of what team he ends up on? I assume the owner picks up whatever new salary he signs for.
You don’t have an easy job keeping up with all the salaries. Just curious, but what source are you using? I was looking around but didn’t find anything great.
Thanks, Bill Harper

Hi Bill, Thanks for your questions. I am going to try and explain them the best way I know how. If this still doesn't answer your questions just reply back. We will be using current 2012 contracts as of 1/31/2012. That means that whoever Prince Fielder signs with, that is the team he will belong on. I used the contracts as of 1/31 because almost all free agents will have signed by then. After the World Series, you will declare your 3 restricted free agents. That means that once the players are bidded on during the free agency period and once the highest bid is made, you will have the option of bidding higher to keep the player. It basically gives you the chance to keep the player if you want to and have enough cap room to keep the player. For year 2 if you drafted a player that becomes a free agent in 2013, he will become a free agent and won't be on your team again unless you are the highest bidder or he is on the restricted free agent list. It will be a little work keeping up with the salaries. In fact I will post this spreadsheet on 1/31 to give everyone time to review it and make sure I got everything correct. I am using the website mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/ if you want to take a look. I am not worried about the arbitration system for players after this year. They are just keeping their current salary until they become a free agent. I hope this answers all of your questions. If not, just let me know. The Brewers are still available if you want them.
